Hello

My name is Is-Haaq Naeem and I study Mathematics with Data Science at City University of London. I have just completed my first year of my four year course which includes a placement year. My blog page is a guiding light for students aspiring to embark on a rewarding journey into the world of data science, offering tailored advice and practical strategies and which also includes my CV which is attached below and can be found in the shop section.

MY STORY

During my early secondary school years I moved to Paris, immersing myself in the vibrant culture and mastering the French language. Attending summer and winter sessions like the PSG football summer camp not only honed my linguistic skills but also instilled invaluable life lessons. Amidst this experience, I transitioned to Amsterdam midway through my GCSE course, navigating the challenges of a new environment and differences in curriculum. Coping with uncertainty and embracing discomfort, I persevered and achieved remarkable success with 8 A*'s in my GCSEs.

 

My path then led me back to London, where I continued to flourish academically. I selected Mathematics, French, and Biology as my A-level subjects and achieved commendable results. This paved the way for me to secure a place at City University of London, where I embarked on a journey to study Mathematics with Data Science. Currently in my first year of a four-year program, I continue to passionately explore the realms of mathematics and data science, fueled by the determination and adaptability that have been the hallmark of my educational journey thus far.

 

My first year studying data science has been a thrilling and enjoyable experience, delving into diverse subjects that have expanded my intellectual horizons. I've explored captivating topics like cryptography, delving into the intricate world of codebreaking and data security, while also immersing myself in logic and set theory, unraveling the foundations of mathematical reasoning. This immersive journey has not only deepened my understanding but also ignited a passion for the multifaceted world of data science.

Why Choose Data Science as a Student

Data science/data analytics stands as a robust career path. With the rapid digitization of virtually every industry, the demand for skilled data scientists continues to surge. This demand is accompanied by an array of opportunities for specialization, be it machine learning, data engineering, or predictive analytics. The multidisciplinary nature of data science ensures that professionals acquire a versatile skill set that remains highly relevant in an ever-evolving technological landscape. 

Data contributes positively in everyday life by informing weather forecasts and facilitating seamless communication through digital platforms. It enables personalized online experiences, from tailored content recommendations to efficient shopping suggestions. Moreover, data-driven insights help individuals make informed decisions, whether it's selecting the best route for their commute or understanding health trends through wearable devices. Overall, data is everywhere nowadays and the job opportunities that have opened up  because of this has been rewarding.

Navigating Your Sixth Form Years for Data Science Success

Navigating your sixth form years to pursue a career in data science requires careful planning and strategic choices. Begin by crafting a compelling personal statement that reflects your passion for data science, mathematics and which also displays characteristics that universities are looking for. It is always good to read many different personal statements to see what universities are looking for as well asking your teachers for second opinions on your statement. It is normal to produce 20 different versions of your statement from when you first started.

Mathematics is an essential subject for aspiring data science students at the university level, as it forms the foundation of analytical and quantitative skills crucial in handling complex datasets. Majority of universities do expect students to take Mathematics and/or Further Mathematics but do check the entry requirements before applying on UCAS. However Computer Science isn't always a necessary subject to take as majority of those skills taught at school are covered again in your courses though it is always a bonus to have.

For top universities, strive for excellent grades, usually A* or A grades in your chosen A-level subjects. Each university's requirements may vary, so research the specific entry criteria of the institutions you're interested in. Beyond grades, universities value passion and initiative, so showcase your commitment through personal projects, research, or internships. Cultivating skills such as programming (Python, R), statistics, and data manipulation is crucial. Engage in extracurricular activities like coding clubs, data analysis projects, or online courses to hone these skills and build a portfolio.

 

Remember, perseverance and dedication are essential. Embrace challenges, seek mentorship, and continuously update your skills. Navigating your sixth form years strategically positions you for a successful journey towards a rewarding career in data science.

Networking and Community Building

Data science networks play a pivotal role in student engagement and growth by providing a platform for like-minded individuals to stay connected, exchange ideas, and share experiences. These networks facilitate knowledge sharing, offer access to valuable resources, and create a sense of community that fosters continuous learning. They enable students to remain updated about the latest trends, tools, and opportunities in the dynamic field of data science.

 

Mentorship is of paramount importance in data science as it offers students personalized guidance from experienced professionals. A mentor can provide insights into real-world challenges, offer career advice, and suggest learning paths tailored to individual goals. Mentorship accelerates skill development, enhances networking, and boosts confidence in navigating the complexities of the data science landscape.

 

To find mentors for their data science journey, you can start by reaching out to professors, industry professionals, or alumni through networking events, conferences, and online platforms. Participating in data science networks and forums is another effective way to connect with potential mentors. Platforms like LinkedIn, professional organisations like the Royal Statistical Society, and university data science clubs are excellent resources for identifying mentors. You'll be surprised how many people are willing to help either to assist in securing internships or provide advice on what steps you should take. Reaching out to family member and/or friends can also be pivotal. I was able to gain both my internships at Netflix and Trent Energy through family members and LinkedIn.

 

In the UK, there are various data science networks that students can leverage, including:

  1. Data Science Festival: A community-driven event series featuring talks, workshops, and networking opportunities for data science enthusiasts.

  2. Women in Data UK: A platform promoting diversity and inclusion in data-related fields, offering events, mentoring, and networking opportunities.

  3. Royal Statistical Society (RSS): A professional society that provides resources, conferences, and networking for statisticians and data scientists.

  4. AI Club for Gender Minorities: A community that focuses on artificial intelligence and data science, supporting gender minorities in technology.

  5. Meetup.com: A platform hosting numerous data science-related meetup groups across the UK, where students can connect with professionals in the field.

  6. MuslamicMakers: A networking event for muslims to gain knowledge and an opportunity  to share experiences.

By actively engaging in data science networks and seeking mentorship, you can harness the power of community and guidance to excel in their data science endeavors.

Securing Internships and Summer Placements

While at university, securing a coveted data science internship requires a strategic blend of academic excellence, skill development, and proactive networking. Focus on excelling in relevant coursework, particularly in mathematics, statistics, and programming languages like Python or R. Engage in hands-on projects that showcase your data analysis and machine learning abilities, building a strong portfolio that demonstrates your practical skills. Actively participate in data science-related clubs, workshops, and industry events to expand your network and gain insights from professionals. Seeking mentorship, honing your communication skills, and staying updated with industry trends will enhance your chances of landing a rewarding data science internship during your university years. Check out the "JOB" section on LinkedIn regularly to discover new opportunities for interns from big companies who are constantly uploading. It is key to have your CV ready by September as many companies upload their summer placements and spring insight weeks during this time. Make sure to practice a few mock assessments when you pass into the next stage.
